RBA Versus RBNZ, How Two Rate Paths Reshape the Aussie Kiwi Cross

Both antipodean central banks are priced for higher rates. Markets are pricing 22 basis points of tightening from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and cash rate futures are implying roughly a 71% chance of a Reserve Bank of Australia hike. But both central banks face different tests, as the RBNZ will be judged on its guidance and the RBA on the strength of underlying inflation. That distinction matters because relative rate expectations feed directly into the Australian and New Zealand dollars, and most clearly into the AUD/NZD cross. When pricing leans this hawkish, the room for a dovish disappointment grows.

David Scutt, StoneX Media Senior Market Analyst for Global Macro, brings more than a decade of experience as an FX spot, forwards and money markets dealer managing interest rate and liquidity risk. He analyzes FX, commodities and equity indices with a focus on Asia-Pacific markets, tracking how central bank decisions and economic data move currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars.

Key Themes

  • Markets price 22 basis points of RBNZ tightening, making a rate hike the overwhelming favorite.
  • Cash rate futures imply roughly 71% odds of an RBA hike, up from 20% a week earlier.
  • AUD/NZD daily moves track the two-year yield spread between Australia and New Zealand.

RBNZ Hike Pricing Puts Guidance at the Center of New Zealand Dollar Risk

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand enters its decision with a hike as the overwhelming favorite, as markets price 22 basis points of tightening at the meeting and 41 basis points by the following one. With no updated forecasts or cash rate track due, the tone of the statement, Governor Anna Breman's press conference and the deliberations behind the decision carry outsized weight for the New Zealand dollar. A hike on its own may not be enough to satisfy a market already leaning this far. "A routine hike accompanied by cautious guidance could disappoint Kiwi bulls, while a surprise hold would likely trigger aggressive selling," Scutt says. For traders in the New Zealand dollar, the RBNZ outcome turns as much on messaging as on the rate move itself.

RBA Hike Odds Hinge on the Trimmed Mean Inflation Print

According to Scutt, Australia's quarterly inflation report "could determine whether the RBA hikes rates again", with markets expecting a 1% rise in the quarterly trimmed mean, the Reserve Bank of Australia's preferred underlying inflation measure, compared with the central bank's own 0.8% forecast. Comments from Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser and Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter have already fueled a sharp hawkish repricing in RBA rate expectations. A trimmed mean reading in line with or above expectations would reinforce that pricing, whereas a meaningful downside miss would challenge it, particularly given the recent deterioration in Australia's labor market. The trimmed mean print therefore shapes not only the RBA's next move but also the relative rate outlook that drives the Australian dollar against its New Zealand counterpart.
