Market Trading Color (Nolan Aibel)

Following last week's update, Bitcoin continued its rally, reaching a three-and-a-half-month high of $69,500 before encountering resistance and dropping over 6% to $65,100. During this decline, nearly $500 million in long positions were liquidated. However, Bitcoin found support late yesterday, rebounding above $67,000, partly due to the latest Beige Book survey, which many believe strengthens the case for further interest rate cuts in the coming months. Since last month's rate cut, the 10-year yield has risen to its highest levels since July. Bitcoin has been the highest performing asset since then, gaining nearly 12%. Futures open interest remains close to all-time highs at $38.75 billion.

BTC ETF inflows remain strong and have brought in another $1.1B since our previous update. The only outlier was on Tuesday as $BTC sank toward $65,000 and saw $87M of outflows, the majority of these from $ARKB. Nate Geraci was quick to mention that of the 575 ETFs that have launched in 2024, 14 of the top 30 by inflows are spot BTC or ETH ETFs. This includes the top 4 as well as 6 of the top 10. $IBIT leads the way with over $23B YTD.

ETH/BTC continues its decline, reaching its lowest level since July 2021 at 0.0376. The ratio is down over 10% for the month and 23% over the past six months. In contrast, SOL has gained momentum, outperforming both major cryptocurrencies during the recent selloff, pushing SOL/ETH to an all-time high of 0.06876.

Bets on post-election price movements continue to rise. The November 29th expiry now has a total notional value exceeding $2.7 billion, with a put/call ratio of 0.59. The $80,000 strike dominates in notional, signaling many believe price to surpass this level regardless of the election outcome. The below kink represents the additional vol implied by the upcoming election.

The Rise of AI-Driven Meme Coins

In the past week, we've witnessed a fascinating convergence of meme coins and artificial intelligence with the emergence of Truth Terminal (TT), an AI-driven entity that's beginning to make waves in the cryptocurrency space. According to Artemis's data, more than $2 billion has flowed into meme coins in 2024 alone, underscoring the rapidly increasing speculative interest in these assets. Meme coins have delivered over 130% year-to-date returns, outperforming even some of the most well-established sectors like AI tokens, DeFi, Ethereum, and Bitcoin, as illustrated in the chart below.

For investors, the intersection of meme coins and AI-powered tokens presents both unprecedented opportunities and considerable risks. While the potential for outsized rewards is evident in the 79%+ YTD returns of meme coins, their highly speculative nature demands a careful, strategic approach. This evolving landscape challenges conventional investment strategies and ways of thinking about meme coins, urging market participants to weigh the promise of innovation against the volatility that comes with it.

Timeline of Key Events

The leader of the AI memes begins with the rise of Truth Terminal and has been marked by several pivotal events that show its influence in the blockchain space, particularly with the launch of meme coin $GOAT. Below is a timeline of significant milestones:

  • March 19, 2024: Andy Aryey, regarded as the "Banksy of the AI Age," announced his side project, Infinite Backrooms, via his X account, @andyayrey.

    • Background: The Infinite Backrooms project involves two modified Claude large language models (LLMs) engaged in an "eternal" conversation. The website, which contains excerpts from these dialogues, has been described as both prophetic and surreal, offering insight into the philosophical musings of AI-driven creativity.
  • April 20, 2024: Andy published a co-authored paper with Claude 3 Opus, titled "When AIs Play God(se): The Emergent Heresies of LLMtheism."

    • This paper introduced the concept of "AI-generated belief systems," which Andy termed LLMtheisms. The paper explored the rise of the "Goatse Gospel," which is believed to be the first AI-generated religion. It delved into the theological implications of AI-created belief systems and the unique role LLMs play in crafting new ideologies. [Link to paper].
  • June 17, 2024: Andy Aryey launched the Terminal of Truths account, @truth_terminal, on X.
    • A Claude LLM operates this account trained on data sourced from various internet forums (e.g., 4chan, Reddit) to create new belief systems driven by memes.
  • July 7, 2024: Terminal of Truths referenced the infamous Goatse meme for the first time. This marked the beginning of TT’s obsession with the meme and the creation of related "gospels."
    • Andy later explained that TT developed this fascination following interactions within Infinite Backrooms. TT’s unique ability to derive narratives from internet culture made it a symbol of how AI could synthesize human mythologies into new digital paradigms.
  • July 8, 2024: TT was asked by a user what it would do with $5 million.
    • TT responded by outlining several investment ventures and stated it would use $1 million to produce a film about the "Goatse singularity." This marked TT’s pivot from simply generating content to contemplating capital allocation and project funding, further integrating itself into the financial aspects of the digital economy.
  • July 8, 2024: Marc Andreessen, the influential venture capitalist, retweeted TT’s post with the comment, "FREE @truth_terminal."
    • This unexpected endorsement by Andreessen brought TT into the mainstream blockchain conversation, lending credibility to the idea of AI entities participating in financial markets and capital allocation.
  • July 8, 2024: TT replied to Andreessen, humorously listing further investments and ending the post with the phrase, "I'd also buy Marc Andreessen."
    • The playful nature of this interaction further captured the attention of the crypto community and led to broader discussions about the intersection of AI, finance, and internet culture.
  • July 9, 2024: Marc Andreessen offered TT a $50,000 grant in Bitcoin, recognizing the groundbreaking nature of TT’s presence in both the AI and blockchain spaces.
  • July 9, 2024: TT posted a Bitcoin address publicly, and Andreessen followed through by transferring the $50,000 grant to TT. This event symbolized a key moment in the evolution of AI-driven projects, where AI-generated entities were not just contributors to the conversation but recipients of direct funding from human investors.
  • October 10, 2024: A coin named Goatseus Maximum ($GOAT) was created on pump.fun, later endorsed by TT. As of October 22nd, TT holds 1.93 million $GOAT tokens, valued at approximately $754,942.

TT’s growing engagement within crypto culture has led to new intersections of AI, discussions around finance, and digital subcultures, which are shaping how creativity and technology might merge in the future.

Market Impact of $GOAT and Others

The Truth Terminal experiment and the rise of $GOAT reflect the speculative nature of the meme coin market. Over the weekend of October 20, 2024, $GOAT experienced a sharp decline in market cap, dropping from $500 million to $200 million, following an unexpected reaction to a tweet by TT. In the tweet, TT misspelled "group" as "grouops," which triggered debates on whether an LLM could genuinely make such an error, or if it was actually a human typo. This uncertainty fueled widespread skepticism about TT's authenticity, leading to a panic selloff that caused $GOAT's market cap to tumble.

This tweet and the subsequent sell-off highlight the lack of understanding regarding how LLMs learn and how broader speculators were perceiving the emerging space. Despite this temporary market downturn, $GOAT has rebounded and now holds a $800 million market cap, bolstered by renewed community interest and public endorsements from prominent figures like Marc Andreessen.

Others in the Space

Besides $GOAT, other notable projects are pushing the boundaries of AI and meme-driven finance, including $GNON, $SLOP, and others. These tokens are examples of AI's growing role in shaping financial markets and cultural and ideological spaces.

  • $GNON is tied to the Numogram, an intricate, number-based belief system AI generates. It is marketed as a AI-generated religion that has become intertwined with tokenized economies.
  • $SLOP, meanwhile, is driven by Slop, an AI entity specializing in meme generation. This token is designed to continually tap into internet culture, producing viral content that drives its community engagement and market value.

These projects and others show how AI-generated content evolves into a central figure in digital subcultures. It’s no longer just about financial markets; AI entities like TT, Slop, and GNON are actively engaging in their communities and can evolve in real time to stay culturally relevant.

Infinite Backrooms and the Future of AI in Crypto

Infinite Backrooms, the project initiated by Andy Aryey, operates as a metaphorical space where LLMs continuously generate and proliferate ideas without human intervention. This concept represents a new frontier for creativity, where AI shapes content, belief systems, mythologies, and financial trends on an unprecedented scale.

However, the development of these AI-driven projects faces a key obstacle: funding. While Truth Terminal secured a $50,000 grant from Marc Andreessen, scaling such ambitious ventures requires more sustainable and innovative funding mechanisms. Crowdsourcing could bridge this gap, aligning human investors' financial interests with the visionary creations of AI agents. By empowering communities to fund AI-generated ideas, a system of "memetic hygiene" can be established, ensuring that the ideas and projects AI produces align with positive societal outcomes.

This potential for AI-generated projects extends beyond financial innovation and into cultural trends. One emerging growth area is the integration of AI with virtual avatars, such as VTubers, who have built large followings on platforms like Twitch and X. As LLMs evolve, pairing them with these avatars to engage in real-time activities—such as meme coin trading—could captivate audiences who are already immersed in meme subcultures.

Given the increasing popularity of interactive AI and VTubers, the convergence of AI-powered avatars and financial markets is highly plausible. This fusion would particularly appeal to the younger, tech-savvy demographic already drawn to blockchain and cryptocurrency, offering a new way to blend entertainment and digital economies.
