Tech Credit Strain Exposes the Financing Problem Behind the AI Boom

Tech credit stress is rising because the AI boom depends on enormous amounts of capital, and higher interest rates make that capital more expensive just as investors question the payoff from that spending. The cost of insuring U.S. technology companies against default has climbed sharply, a signal that concern over the AI investment cycle has moved beyond the stock market. That shift matters because the Nasdaq 100 has kept falling even as bond yields eased, which suggests interest rates alone no longer explain the pressure on technology stocks.

Fawad Razaqzada, StoneX Media Market Analyst, has more than 12 years of trading and analysis experience across forex, indices, commodities and cryptocurrencies. His coverage combines macroeconomics with technical analysis and price action, spanning the interest rate, inflation and equity index moves that shape technology stocks and the AI trade.

Key Themes

  • The cost of insuring U.S. technology companies against default has climbed, extending AI concerns into credit markets.
  • A strong Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company revenue outlook fails to lift the broader technology sector.
  • The Nasdaq 100 keeps falling despite lower bond yields, pointing to pressure beyond interest rates.

Tech Credit Stress Rises as AI Financing Costs Climb

Tech credit stress is building as the cost of insuring U.S. technology companies against default climbs, extending the AI selloff into credit markets. Data centers, chipmakers and infrastructure all require huge amounts of capital, and interest rates that stay higher for longer raise the cost of financing that buildout while also reducing the present value of the future cash flows it is meant to generate. As a result, a more hawkish Federal Reserve weighs on technology companies twice over, once through funding costs and again through valuations. When default protection costs rise alongside falling share prices, the market is questioning not only what AI companies are worth, but also the economics of the spending itself. According to Razaqzada, "Increasingly, investors are questioning the valuations and economics behind the AI boom."

TSMC Outlook Fails to Lift Chipmakers as AI Profit Doubts Grow

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company delivered a strong revenue outlook, yet the result failed to lift the broader technology sector, a sign that good AI demand news is no longer enough for chipmakers. Heavy overnight losses in Asian technology stocks, including a drop of about 8% in South Korea's benchmark index that triggered circuit breakers, added to the pressure. The muted reaction suggests, Razaqzada says, that "the debate is shifting from how big AI can become to how profitable the enormous investment cycle" will ultimately prove to be. Consequently, chipmakers face a tougher test, with investors weighing the returns on AI spending rather than the scale of demand alone. Tech credit markets are weighing the same question, which is why concern over AI spending now shows up in default protection costs as well as share prices.
