Following a strong advance, the S&P’s structure now shows patterns associated with exhaustion and long liquidation pressure. These developments underline how quickly bullish sentiment can fade when chart dynamics shift from support to warning.
Michael Ragazzo, Director of Tactical Strategies at StoneX, assesses weekly and daily formations to frame actionable risk thresholds. His read of candlestick structure and gap levels offers a disciplined playbook for identifying inflection points before they fully materialize.
Ragazzo flags an uncommon weekly formation that often marks a transition from optimism to caution. He notes the presence of “a bearish gravestone doji”, a signal previously observed at the end of 2024 before a brief consolidation and then a rapid decline. Its reappearance implies that traders may be nearing exhaustion after prolonged gains. Sensitivity to negative catalysts tends to increase when such patterns emerge.
On the daily chart, Ragazzo highlights that the “downside gap of 6,785 has been approached” and initial buying interest has appeared near that level. A decisive settlement beneath this gap would, as he states, “incentivize further downside”, aligning with the weekly bearish tone. Conversely, a confirmed close above 6,874 is required to negate the risk signal and restore an upside bias. These thresholds help traders translate pattern recognition into disciplined positioning.
