UPDATE: Colombia's Coffee Production Hits Decade High in 2024-2025 with 14.869 Million Bags

(Adds coffee production and exports)

Bogota (Coffee Network)  -- Colombia produced 14.869 million of 60-kg green bags in the 2024-2025 coffee year, up 17% on the year, the coffee growers federation said.

This is the highest production for a coffee year in a decade, the coffee growers federation added.

Colombia had produced 12.758 million bags in the coffee year 2023-2024 and 10.618 million bags in the 2022-2023 coffee year.

In the last decade, the second highest coffee production in a coffee year was in 2016-2017 when it produced 14.634 million bags, according to figures from FNC.

“The 2025 coffee year closes with more than 2 million additional bags, breaking the record of the last 30 years,” FNC added.

In September, Colombia produced 1.142 million bags, up 7% on the year when it had produced 1.071 million bags.

In the first nine months, Colombia produced 9.970 million bags, 872,000 bags higher than the 9.098 million bags recorded in January-September 2024.

A dry spell linked to El Niño weather phenomenon last year propelled the key flowering stage leading to high coffee production mostly in 2024. But torrential rains since December last year delayed flowering resulting in an expected lower production for the months September through December, when Colombia picks its main harvest.

Exports Higher

In the 2024-2025 coffee year, Colombia shipped 13.328 million bags, up 12% from the 11.866 million bags in the preceding coffee year.

Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee producing nation, shipped 1.063 million bags in September, up 6% from the 998,000 bags in the same period last year.

In January-September, Colombia exported 9.791 million bags, up from 8.786 million in the same period last year.

Imports skyrocketed

In September, Colombia imported 181,000 bags, up 166% on the year reflecting increased imports as the start-up of tariffs to enter the US has prompted Brazilian and Vietnamese coffee entering Colombia to get reexported from Colombia to take advantage of lower tariffs, analysts and traders explained.

Colombia imported 893,000 bags in the coffee year 2024-2025.

Consumption

Colombia consumed 2.253 million bags in the 2024-2025 coffee year, while it consumed 181,000 bags in September 2025, up 3% from the 175,000 bags in the same month last year.

In Colombia, coffee consumption per person increased likely to 3.8 kg per capita in 2024, up from 2.8 kg per year in 2023, according to consultancy firm Kantar. This is due to a growing appreciation for coffee and an increase in consumption frequency, with 88% of Colombians drinking coffee at least once a week, and a diversification of preparation methods, Kantar added.
