Afamefuna Umeh, StoneX Head of Fixed Income for Sub-Saharan Africa, examines Africa’s diverging debt paths as some countries stabilize and others struggle.
Umeh notes that Ghana has seen improved investor sentiment after agreeing a $2.8 billion restructuring deal. “The upgrade in ratings from Fitch and S&P Global has strengthened the case that the recovery is actually on course”. Slowing inflation and stronger reserves support this trend, though risks from external shocks remain.
Zambia’s restructuring has reduced debt pressures and extended repayment timelines. Umeh highlights that “the IMF program gave some sort of policy guidance, improved stability, improved investor sentiment in Zambia”. Sustained fiscal discipline and ongoing reforms are critical for lasting stability.
Kenya’s debt servicing costs and revenue challenges are limiting fiscal space. Umeh observes that while the situation looks difficult, “I don’t think that Kenya is close to breaking point”. He emphasizes the need for revenue mobilization, policy reforms, and prudent spending to restore confidence.
Senegal faces one of the most serious debt challenges in Africa. Umeh explains that an IMF deal stalled after an audit was required to clarify the true debt levels, which hurt investor confidence. “It’s not looking good”, he states, though negotiations and reforms could help stabilize the outlook.
