Bigger U.S. Soybean Crop Fails to Loosen a Tightening Balance Sheet

U.S. soybean production is up 6.4% from last year, yet U.S. soybean ending stocks are projected almost 5% lower. U.S. soybean ending stocks are tightening because crush demand tied to biofuels and renewed Chinese buying are absorbing the bigger harvest. That gap between a large soybean crop and a shrinking carryout is why harvest pressure has trimmed soybean rallies without breaking the market's floor.

Isabela Garcia, Senior Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil, authors the firm's Quarterly Soybean Outlook and produces commodity market intelligence and pricing research for commercial agricultural clients across South America. Her work across grain and oilseed markets tracks the supply, crush and trade flows that feed into the U.S. soybean balance sheet and the risk management decisions built on it.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • U.S. soybean production rises 6.4% from last year on a larger planted area.
  • U.S. soybean ending stocks are projected almost 5% below last season's level.
  • U.S. soybean crush is expected to grow about 4%, backed by biofuel demand.

U.S. Soybean Crush Growth Drives Ending Stocks Lower

U.S. soybean ending stocks are projected almost 5% below last season's level, with U.S. soybean crush expected to grow about 4% and absorb a larger share of the crop. Biofuel demand sits behind much of that pull, and Garcia links the soybean strength to "high crude oil prices that spill over into soybean oil". The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been revising its U.S. soybean ending stocks estimate lower. Consequently, commercial buyers and processors are working with a thinner soybean carryout and less cushion against demand surprises.

Harvest Pressure Caps Soybean Rallies as Demand Limits Losses

Harvest pressure on Chicago soybean futures stems from a bigger U.S. crop, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture putting production up 6.4% from last year on more planted area. Chinese purchases and biofuel demand are offsetting much of that soybean supply, which is why the U.S. balance sheet keeps tightening rather than loosening. For producers and end users, that mix tends to cap soybean rallies while the harvest moves ahead, whereas demand on this scale limits how far prices fall. As Garcia puts it, "Overall, I describe a large crop that's being met by solid demand".

Bigger U.S. Soybean Crop Fails to Loosen a Tightening Balance Sheet

A bigger U.S. soybean harvest is meeting crush, biofuel and Chinese demand strong enough to shrink ending stocks. That balance explains why harvest pressure trims soybean rallies but leaves a floor under the market.

U.S. Biofuel RIN Gap Keeps a Bid Under Soybean Oil Feedstock Demand

The U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard turns every gallon of biodiesel and renewable diesel into a credit, which makes RIN generation a direct read on soybean oil feedstock demand. A wide gap to the annual target supports that demand, while EPA small refinery exemptions and an unresolved reallocation cloud when it arrives.
