Cotton prices have climbed to a multi-year high, and a large share of the push is coming from outside the cotton field. Cotton and polyester prices are linked through crude oil, because higher oil costs lift polyester prices and make cotton the more competitive fiber for textile mills. Conflict involving Iran, attacks on Saudi pipelines and strikes on vessels in the Red Sea pushed crude oil higher, and that cost increase carried through to the main synthetic alternative to cotton. With the U.S. Department of Agriculture projecting the smallest global cotton stocks relative to demand since the 2010/11 season, the energy link is landing on a cotton market that was already tight.
Raphael Bulascoschi, StoneX Brazil Market Intelligence Analyst, delivers commodity market intelligence and pricing research to commercial agricultural clients across South America from Campinas. He tracks cotton alongside corn and soybeans, contributes to the StoneX quarterly commodity outlooks, and analyzes how energy and policy shifts, including biofuel policy, move domestic and global commodity markets.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Higher crude oil prices lift polyester costs and improve the demand outlook for cotton in textile mills.
Black Sea tensions and Middle East conflict add a risk premium across energy and agricultural markets.
Easing geopolitical tensions or funds exiting long positions can unwind part of the cotton rally.
Cotton Demand Strengthens as Crude Oil Lifts Polyester Costs
Cotton demand gains support when crude oil prices rise, because higher oil prices lift the price of polyester, the synthetic fiber that competes with cotton for the same textile orders. That relationship turned in cotton's favor as crude oil climbed through the year. As Bulascoschi puts it, "since polyester competes directly with cotton in the textile industry, that improved the demand outlook for the natural fiber". For spinning mills and textile buyers, a pricier synthetic shifts the relative cost of the two fibers toward cotton. Consequently, cotton picks up demand support that has nothing to do with the size of its own harvest.
Geopolitical Risk Premium Spreads From Energy Into Cotton Markets
Geopolitical risk in energy markets reaches cotton through two channels, the price of crude oil and a broader risk premium across commodities. According to Bulascoschi, "the ongoing tensions in the Black Sea also adds another layer of risk premium across energy and agricultural market as a whole". The conflict involving Iran spread beyond the Strait of Hormuz to attacks on Saudi pipelines and on vessels in the Red Sea, keeping crude oil elevated. Specifically, cotton absorbs that premium twice, once through polyester costs and again through the wider bid for agricultural commodities. Commercial cotton buyers are therefore paying for supply risk that sits well away from the fields where the fiber is grown.
Cotton Rally Premium Hinges on Geopolitics and Fund Positioning
Cotton's energy-linked premium is also the part of the rally most exposed to a reversal. Speculative long positions held by funds amplified the move up, and Bulascoschi notes that if funds "start to exit those positions, that could bring prices to more balanced levels". Inflation and the risk of an economic slowdown add a second pressure point, since downward revisions to global consumption would ease part of the current tightness in cotton. Conversely, the fundamental cotton story of tightening supply and growing consumption does not depend on oil at all. "A large part of the recent rally reflects geopolitical tensions. So any easing there could unwind some of the premium across the whole commodities space", he says.
