Europe's Heating Oil Season Arrives as Diesel Supply Remains Squeezed

Diesel has become one of the sharpest pressure points in Europe's energy crisis, with pump prices across the European Union peaking at an average 41% above where they stood before the Middle East conflict began. Europe's winter diesel supply is tight because geopolitics, from Iran to fuel export bans in China and Russia, is outweighing a recovery in crude supply just as seasonal demand for heating oil starts to climb. That matters for anyone who buys, moves or hedges fuel, because an emergency stock release from the International Energy Agency has not delivered the relief the market was hoping for.

Marco Saggese, vice president of clearing and execution sales at StoneX, comes from a background in energy sales and broking that spans oil and energy derivatives markets through multiple volatility cycles. He tracks energy derivatives and oil market volatility and has covered Europe's energy supply exposure, the same fault line now running through the continent's winter diesel market.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • Geopolitics, not refinery fundamentals, is setting the direction for Europe's diesel market heading into winter.
  • Rising winter demand for diesel and heating oil is landing on a supply base that is already tight.
  • Political decisions in Washington and Moscow are shaping where Europe sources its diesel.

Heating Oil Demand Adds Winter Pressure to Europe's Diesel Market

Heating oil demand is climbing into winter just as Europe's diesel market is already short of supply. "In the short term, we are also looking at a winter coming up where demand starts going up for some of these products," Saggese says, pointing to a market where supply strain and seasonal demand are now colliding. The International Energy Agency's release of more than 20 million barrels of diesel has not cooled things either, because traders had expected 50 million and, in Saggese's words, "the market reacts accordingly. So prices start going up." For fuel buyers and distributors, that leaves seasonal demand and supply risk pulling diesel prices in the same direction as winter approaches.

Diesel Supply Relief Depends on Gulf Flows Through the Strait of Hormuz

Diesel supply relief for Europe depends heavily on Gulf products moving freely through the Strait of Hormuz, which in turn rests on a resolution in Iran. With winter bringing a need for more diesel and more heating oil, Saggese says, "We'd love to see the Gulf pushing all products through the Strait of Hormuz without any problems. It would certainly alleviate a lot of the issues that we're seeing around the market." Steady Gulf flows would ease pressure on a diesel market already stretched by export bans in China and Russia, yet political headlines keep shifting that outlook from one day to the next. According to Saggese, the market's whole fundamental structure "could absolutely, completely change" within three months.
