Insurance Markets Now Dictate Global Oil Flow Recovery

Kathryn Rooney Vera

Managing Director and Chief Market Strategist

Global oil markets are facing a historic disruption centered on the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker traffic has collapsed and supply chains remain constrained. The scale of the disruption reflects not just geopolitical tension but a structural breakdown in the mechanisms that enable physical trade. Oil prices alone are no longer sufficient to restore flows, as the ability to move cargo depends on entirely different market dynamics. This shift places insurance markets at the center of global energy logistics and recovery timelines.

Kathryn Rooney Vera, StoneX Group Chief Market Strategist, has extensive experience analysing global macroeconomic shifts and cross-asset market dynamics during periods of geopolitical stress. Her perspective uniquely connects insurance market behaviour with physical commodity flows, offering insight into the real constraints shaping today’s oil market disruption.

Key Themes from the Discussion

  • War risk premiums surged from 0.2% to 1%, making oil shipping economically unviable without security guarantees.
  • Approximately 90% of tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has halted, disrupting around 20 million barrels per day.
  • Oil flow recovery depends on insurance coverage and naval escort commitments, not oil price movements.

Insurance Markets Determine Oil Flow Recovery Timing

Insurance markets are now the primary constraint on oil flow recovery as of March 2026 due to surging war risk premiums. Kathryn Rooney Vera states that "oil prices are what everyone is watching. They're not what determines whether flows resume. Insurance does", highlighting a fundamental shift in market drivers. Consequently, even elevated oil prices cannot incentivise shipping if cargo cannot be insured under current risk conditions. This dynamic forces market participants to monitor insurance coverage decisions as the true signal of recovery, rather than relying on traditional price indicators.

War Risk Premiums Reshape Oil Shipping Economics

War risk premiums have increased sharply, fundamentally altering the economics of transporting oil through key routes. As Kathryn Rooney Vera explains, "war risk premiums went from 0.2% of vessel value per transit to about 1%", significantly increasing costs on high-value cargo. This escalation results in millions of dollars in additional expense per shipment, making many trades uneconomical unless oil prices remain significantly elevated. As a result, commercial shippers are withdrawing from the market, leading to a collapse in tanker traffic and prolonging supply disruptions across global energy markets.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for October 28

October 28 – Stock futures are pointing to a mostly higher open, led by the tech heavy Nasdaq as it attempts to add to impressive early week gains, with big earnings reports on deck after today’s close from both Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet, followed by Amazon tomorrow, and Apple next Monday (11/2). The VIX is starting the day slightly below yesterday’s close, hovering near 17.4 at the time of writing. The dollar is losing some steam after back-to-back days of sharp gains to start the week, trading just below the 102.34 mark after touching a fresh two-week high near 102.5 overnight. Treasury yields are off to a quietly mixed start, with 2-year yields up slightly to 4.743%, 10-year yields unchanged at 4.993%, and 30-year yields slightly lower to sit at 5.30%. The ags are mostly looking at a quietly higher open, looking to find their footing after an ugly selloff to start the week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for October 27

October 27 – The Fed’s October meeting kicks off today, though CME’s FedWatch currently shows 90%+ odds of the FOMC holding rates steady this week, with the next 25-basis point hike seen at the December meeting. With that said, the bigger intrigue will likely come from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference tomorrow afternoon as traders parse through his comments to shape expectations for the Fed’s path forward. Meanwhile, stock futures are pointing to a positive open, looking to add to yesterday’s gains. The VIX is falling again, off roughly 3% on the day to hang near 17.8 at the time of writing. The dollar is looking to add to yesterday’s gains as well, up just over 0.1% to trade at a nearly two-week high around the 102.15 level. Treasury yields are quietly mixed to start the day, with 2-year yields slightly higher to trade at 4.714%, while long-term yields are slightly lower, with 10-year yields at 4.98% and 30-year yields at 5.292%. Crude oil prices are quietly lower, with nearby WTI down 0.4% on the day, trading near $100.80 and nearby Brent down 0.6%, trading near $110.10. The ags are mixed to start the day, with soybeans looking to rebound after yesterday’s knee-jerk selloff in response to the unexpected re-election of Brazilian President Lula and subsequent selloff in the Brazilian Real, which is also looking to rebound this morning.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for October 26

October 26 – Stock futures pointed modestly higher overnight as we head into “Fed Week” on Wall Street, but traders will be monitoring plenty of other potential market-moving headlines as we go through the week. We still have two wars on commodity logistics in major commodity producing areas of the world that have every appearance of escalating in the days and weeks ahead, instability continues in France, increasing demand for U.S. Treasuries, and now we can through Brazil into the mix of places where political uncertainty has significant implications. The VIX remains modestly elevated near 19 this morning as a result, while the dollar index trades near 101.9. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.99% at this hour, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.71%. WTI crude oil is trading notably lower near $102, while Brent trades near $116 per barrel. The grain and oilseed markets were also mostly lower to start the week.
