Nasdaq Under Pressure as Tech Giants Lose Market Control

By: Razan Hilal, Market Analyst

As U.S. equity markets move deeper into 2026, the Nasdaq is no longer setting the pace for broader index performance. Capital rotation toward defensive and haven assets is coinciding with fading leadership from the stocks that once carried the index higher. This shift is occurring even as other benchmarks remain near key psychological thresholds. The result is a growing disconnect between headline stability and underlying market stress.

Razan Hilal, FOREX.com Market Analyst, evaluates how weakening technical structures in mega-cap technology are reshaping Nasdaq’s role within US equity markets.

Key Themes

  • Bearish weekly structures in Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple undermine Nasdaq leadership.
  • Relative strength indicators point to sustained downside pressure rather than temporary consolidation.
  • Index divergence highlights growing risk beneath surface-level market resilience.

When Leadership Becomes a Liability

Nasdaq’s concentration in mega-cap technology has historically provided outsized performance during bullish cycles. That same structure now amplifies downside risk as leadership momentum deteriorates. Hilal notes that “bears dominance is evident across the weekly charts of Nvidia, Microsoft and Apple”, reinforcing the shift away from growth leadership. As those stocks weaken simultaneously, the index loses its ability to absorb broader market uncertainty.

Divergence Signals Beneath the Index Level

While the Dow Jones approaches major psychological levels, Nasdaq price action remains confined to a corrective range. Hilal highlights that “the mentioned divergence of the Nasdaq chart is reflecting caution across the broader markets”, even as other indices appear more resilient. This divergence suggests risk is being redistributed rather than eliminated. Without renewed leadership from its largest constituents, Nasdaq remains vulnerable to deeper corrective phases.
