Venezuelan Rare Earth Minerals Shift US China Supply Risks

By: Arlan Suderman, Chief Commodities Economist

Arlan Suderman, StoneX Chief Commodities Economist, has monitored how geopolitical disruptions translate into commodity risk pricing across multiple cycles. His analysis connects Venezuela's rare earth minerals to the structural constraint of processing dominance, which determines whether reserves can translate into secure supply.

Key Themes

  • Venezuela's rare earth minerals may be large enough to shift supply security assumptions even before development is verified.
  • China's rare earth processing dominance leaves the United States exposed even when rare earth oxides are mined domestically.
  • Venezuela's rare earth minerals add geopolitical leverage because refining access can determine industrial winners and losers.

Venezuela's Rare Earth Minerals Expand US Supply Options

Venezuela's rare earth minerals are being treated as a strategic supply option because access can dilute China’s ability to control future processing-linked chokepoints. Suderman highlights the scale uncertainty while underscoring the potential by stating, “Venezuela, although still not fully documented, may have roughly half of that supply level”. That possibility matters because Venezuela's rare earth minerals could influence where refining investment and geopolitical alignment concentrate over the next decade. Consequently, supply chain planning increasingly weighs Venezuela's rare earth minerals as a leverage variable rather than a distant exploration story.

China's Processing Dominance Keeps Venezuela's Rare Earths Political

China's rare earth processing dominance means Venezuela's rare earth minerals do not automatically translate into a secure supply for the United States. Suderman makes the constraint explicit by warning that “Mining a mineral domestically does not safeguard the national security of the United States if the United States remains dependent on a foreign country for the processing”. Venezuela's rare earth minerals, therefore, remain politically sensitive because refining pathways and downstream manufacturing access can be influenced by alignment and restriction. As a result, Venezuela's rare earth minerals add risk not only through availability but through who controls processing routes and final distribution.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for September 24

September 24 – Angst in the bond market and increasing expectations of higher for longer interest rates has stock futures pointing to a lower open today, with trade likely to be volatile around headlines from today’s Trump/Xi meeting. Treasury yields yesterday rose to fresh multi-year highs across the curve, with the biggest moves seen in the long end. Most notably, 30-year yields made a new high not seen since 2004, 10-year yields made highs not seen since 2007, and 2-year yields made new highs not seen since early 2024. They do look to be coming off of these highs to start the day, with 2-year yields back down to 4.85%, 10-year yields at 5.10%, and 30-year yields at 5.40% at the time of writing. The VIX is pushing to its highest level of the week back above 16, but it’s worth noting this remains on the low-end of 2026’s trade. The dollar is continuing its surge higher as well amid the aforementioned rising rate expectations, posting another near two-month high above the 101.3 mark. Crude oil is bouncing from its recent bottom but remains notably lower than trade over the last two weeks, with nearby WTI trading at $93.70 and nearby Brent trading at $99.80 at the time of writing. The ags are largely mixed, with soybeans showing the most strength at the break with all eyes on today’s Trump/Xi meeting, with major implications for the sector.

Winter Wheat Planting Slows in Dry Russian Soil as Export Income Falls

Dry soil is slowing winter wheat planting in Russia and Ukraine, with a third of Ukraine's area in moisture deficit. Lost export revenue and costly diesel add a second risk to the size of the next Black Sea wheat crop.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for September 23

September 23 – The Nasdaq hit another fresh all-time high yesterday, with the S&P 500 close to doing so as well, though stock futures are pointing to a quietly lower start to today’s session after surging higher to start the week as optimism surrounding this week’s various diplomatic pushes abounds. That optimism continues to be reflected in the VIX, continuing to hang around roughly three-week lows, trading at 14.3 this morning. The dollar is surging higher, adding to the week’s gains, as it nears the 101 mark for the first time in nearly two months. Treasury yields are off to a higher start, with 2-year yields back up to 4.80%, 10-year yields at 4.99%, and 30-year yields just above 5.32%. Crude oil prices are looking to hold their ground after a steady decline since late last week, with nearby WTI up 1.3% to trade near $91 and nearby Brent up 1.4% to trade near $100.65 at the time of writing. The ags are mostly lower to start the day, likely influenced in part by managed money selling off some existing length amid hopes for improvement regarding commodity flow through the Black Sea as part of this week’s diplomacy blitz.
