Market cycles that exhibit rapid price expansions often trigger debates about whether valuations reflect genuine opportunity or speculative excess. These periods can draw traders into emotionally charged narratives that overshadow the technical signals operating beneath the surface. The risk is that attention drifts away from structure at precisely the moment it becomes most important. Bubble conditions therefore elevate the need for analytical clarity in environments where momentum and emotion compete for influence.

Historical episodes demonstrate that identifying a bubble does not provide a usable trading signal, because price discovery can continue for years after the first warning signs appear. Stanley notes this dynamic when recalling how Alan Greenspan questioned whether markets could recognise a bubble before it bursts and summarised it in the phrase "irrational exuberance". The challenge is that markets frequently advance even after prominent cautions which highlights the need for tactical patience. Traders face the possibility of premature exits or poorly timed shorts if they prioritise narrative over price behaviour.
Stanley emphasises that reliable opportunities emerge not from predicting turning points but from observing whether buyers or sellers defend key levels. He illustrates this by showing how technical patterns such as rising wedges and failed retests can reveal early shifts in conviction and notes that "there are very clean and clear market structures that build on the way up and on the way down". This approach encourages traders to work with confirmation rather than anticipation. As a result they can define risk more effectively and avoid reacting to the emotional tone that often dominates bubble discussions.
