Canadian Dollar Technical Outlook: USD/CAD Short-term Trade Levels
- USD/CAD has reversed sharply from recent highs, erasing gains after a failed breakout attempt.
- Price is now testing a critical support zone that could determine the next directional move.
- A break below support would signal a broader trend reversal and deeper downside risk while a hold could trigger a near-term rebound within the current range.
- Resistance 1.3819/21, 1.3877/88 (key), 1.3916/29- Support 1.3722/33 (key), 1.3667, 1.3586
USD/CAD has turned sharply lower after failing to sustain gains near recent highs, with the pair now testing a critical support zone. The pullback follows a strong advance but comes amid growing signs of exhaustion, shifting the focus to whether this decline marks a corrective move or the start of a broader reversal. The reaction at current levels is likely to provide important guidance for the near-term outlook. Battle lines drawn on the USD/CAD short-term technical charts.
Canadian Dollar Price Chart – USD/CAD Daily

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; USD/CAD on TradingView
Technical Outlook: In last month’s Canadian Dollar Short-term Outlook, we noted that USD/CAD was testing pivotal resistance and that, “From at trading standpoint, pullbacks should be limited to 1.36 IF price is heading higher on this stretch with a close above 1.3733 needed to fuel the next leg of the advance.” Price registered an intraday low at 1.3670 five-days later before breaking out with the subsequent rally extending more than 3.2% off the March low.
The advance failed into the start of the month near the January high at 1.3929. A decline of nearly 1.7% now takes USD/CAD back into a critical pivot zone at 1.3722/33- a region defined by the September & August swing lows, the objective yearly open, the February opening-range high, and the 38.2% retracement of the November decline. Note that this is the origin of the March breakout and the lower parallel converges on this threshold over the next few days. The immediate focus is on possible inflection off this key zone in the days ahead.
Canadian Dollar Price Chart – USD/CAD 240min

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; USD/CAD on TradingView
Notes: A closer look at Canadian Dollar price action shows USD/CAD trading within the confines of a descending pitchfork extending off the highs with the lower parallel further highlighting key support at 1.3722/33. A break / daily close below this threshold would suggest a more significant high is in place and a larger trend reversal is underway. Subsequent support objectives rest with the 61.8% retracement at 1.3667 and the 78.6% retracement at 1.3586.
Resistance is eyed at the 200-day moving average and the 38.2% retracement of the recent decline at 1.3819/21. Note that the upper parallel converges on this zone over the next few days and a breach / close above would be needed to invalidate the late-March downtrend and shift the near-term focus higher again. Subsequent resistance objectives are eyed at the 61.8% retracement, the October swing low, and the 61.8% retracement of the broader November decline at 1.3877/88. The median-line converges on this level next week and ultimately a break above this slope is needed to mark resumption of the broader uptrend towards the high-day close (HDC) / January high at 1.3916/29.
Bottom line: The USD/CAD is testing pivotal support here and we are on the lookout for possible price inflection off this zone. From a trading standpoint, a good zone to reduce portions of short-exposure / lower protective stops- rallies should be limited to 1.3821 IF price is heading lower on this stretch with a close below 1.3722 needed to fuel the next leg of the decline.
