With only a few days remaining before the end of August, signs of fading momentum have become increasingly evident across the cryptocurrency market. This weakness became more apparent following comments from Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole, where he highlighted the persistence of inflationary pressures in the United States and suggested a less accommodative monetary policy environment in the months ahead. For now, this backdrop has started to favor more stable alternative markets and could continue limiting the recovery previously seen across cryptocurrencies. As long as this uncertainty remains in place, the lack of direction could continue to be one of the market's most visible characteristics.
Jackson Hole Increases Market Uncertainty
During today's session, Kevin Warsh delivered his speech at the Jackson Hole symposium. The Federal Reserve Chair maintained a relatively hawkish tone, emphasizing that inflation in the United States remains above the central bank's target and reiterating the importance of bringing it back toward the 2% objective. He also noted that the U.S. economy continues to show resilience, a situation that could still justify an environment of elevated interest rates for longer.
Although he did not directly mention the need for additional rate hikes, the overall tone of the speech was interpreted as a signal that a more accommodative Federal Reserve does not appear to be on the horizon.
Shortly after Warsh's remarks, markets began adjusting their expectations for upcoming monetary policy decisions. For the September 16 meeting, investors now assign roughly a 57% probability that the benchmark rate could rise toward the 4.00% area, compared with a 42% probability that rates remain unchanged. This shift is notable because, prior to the Jackson Hole comments, market expectations were still largely centered around stable interest rates.

The impact was not limited to Federal Reserve expectations. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields, one of the main alternative markets competing with cryptocurrencies for capital flows, also moved higher and returned toward the 4.7% area, close to yearly highs.
This recovery reflects a scenario in which markets perceive the Federal Reserve as less willing to ease monetary policy. As a result, fixed-income assets become more attractive and demand for traditionally stable instruments tends to strengthen.

This environment is generally less supportive for cryptocurrencies, as higher interest rates tend to reduce the relative appeal of risk assets. At the same time, stronger bond yields can redirect capital toward investments offering more predictable returns, potentially limiting demand for markets such as cryptocurrencies in the short term.
Part of this dynamic appears to be emerging in market activity metrics. Bitcoin's Open Interest has fallen back toward the $24.8 billion area, a signal that part of the market's open positions have begun to unwind. Given that this decline coincided with a pullback in BTC prices during the final trading session of the week, the move may be pointing to a reduction in bullish positioning following the Federal Reserve's comments.

Taken together, developments from Jackson Hole have not been particularly supportive for the demand dynamics that were helping sustain the cryptocurrency market in previous weeks. As long as uncertainty surrounding a higher-rate environment persists and alternative markets such as bonds continue becoming more attractive, it may be difficult for confidence to stabilize consistently across the sector. As a result, a broader period of indecision could remain a dominant theme in cryptocurrency markets over the near term.
Bitcoin Relative to Other Markets
It is also important to monitor the relationship that has developed between Bitcoin and the U.S. dollar. Over recent weeks, the two assets have maintained a particularly strong negative correlation. The 25-day correlation coefficient remains close to -1, reflecting that both markets have moved in opposite directions throughout much of the recent period. As always, correlation levels can change over time.

This relationship is especially relevant because much of Bitcoin's recovery in previous weeks occurred during a period of broad U.S. dollar weakness. However, conditions have started to shift toward the end of the week. The dollar has regained some of the ground lost following the Federal Reserve's latest comments, while Bitcoin has shown more visible signs of losing momentum.
This behavior suggests that part of the market's capital flows may be returning to more defensive assets amid concerns that the monetary environment could become less favorable for risk markets. If this correlation remains in place and the dollar continues to recover, it could limit the conditions needed for a stronger rebound across cryptocurrencies, potentially reinforcing the current period of uncertainty.
Confidence Begins to Slow
Another important measure of market sentiment is the Fear & Greed Index. After several weeks of rapid gains, the indicator has started to decline and recently moved back toward the 78-point area, leaving the "Extreme Greed" zone and returning to the "Greed" category.

The index remains relevant because it often acts as a gauge of risk appetite across the market. Although current readings still reflect a relatively optimistic environment, the recent decline suggests that some of the enthusiasm seen in previous weeks has begun to moderate.
If the indicator continues to weaken in the coming sessions, it could reinforce the cautious tone that has emerged following Jackson Hole and make it more difficult for demand to stabilize across the cryptocurrency market. Under such a scenario, the lack of direction around digital assets could remain one of the most important themes heading into the first weeks of September.
