AUD/JPY Rally Into 110 Reveals Bull Trap Risk at Highs

By: Matt Simpson, Market Analyst

In February 2026, AUD/JPY has advanced to a 35-year high, pressing into major historical resistance near the 110 level. The powerful rally from April’s low has unfolded with very limited retracement, creating increasingly stretched technical conditions. As of this week, price action is stalling just above the prior spring high from 1991, a level that long term market participants are closely monitoring. That combination of breakout and hesitation leaves AUD/JPY vulnerable to a shift in momentum at a critical inflection point.

Matt Simpson, Market Analyst at FOREX.com, has extensive experience analysing multi timeframe technical structures across global foreign exchange markets. His work focuses on identifying exhaustion signals and reversal formations at structural highs, giving him a distinct perspective on when breakouts transition into potential bull traps, particularly in major currency pairs such as AUD/JPY.

Key Themes

  • AUD/JPY breaks above a 35-year high but quickly stalls near the 1991 resistance level.
  • Weekly dark cloud cover pattern signals potential bull trap risk at historic highs.
  • Daily bearish divergence near 110 suggests fading upside momentum after four consecutive gains.

AUD/JPY Breakout Above 35-Year High Increases Bull Trap Risk

AUDJPY has pushed above a 35-year range high, yet the breakout is showing signs of strain at historic resistance. Simpson cautions that "it's not that often you see prices simply break above a prior spring high like that, especially on the monthly timeframe", underscoring the rarity of sustained moves beyond such long-term barriers. The swift move back beneath the previous high following the breakout suggests late bullish positioning may already be under pressure. Consequently, AUD/JPY faces elevated bull trap risk if buyers fail to defend the breakout zone in the sessions ahead.

AUD/JPY Weekly Reversal Pattern Signals Corrective Risk Toward 107

AUD/JPY weekly price action is now reinforcing downside risk through visible reversal formations. Simpson identifies "two bearish reversal called dark cloud cover" and describes the structure as "a bit of a bull trap", confirming a shift in sentiment at the cycle high. On the daily timeframe, bearish divergence into the 110 handle adds further evidence that upside momentum is fading after four consecutive up days. As a result, AUD/JPY could rotate into an ABC style correction toward the monthly pivot near 107 and the 106 to 106.50 support cluster if bullish momentum does not reassert control.
