The Brazil election selloff hit the Brazilian real and Brazilian stocks on the Monday after the second round, when Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a surprise fourth term as president of Brazil. Brazilian assets sold off so sharply because investors had positioned heavily for a victory by Flávio Bolsonaro, the main opposition candidate, and had priced in a strong fiscal adjustment that Lula's win took off the table. With that one-sided positioning unwinding at once, the Brazilian real depreciated sharply and Brazilian assets repriced for higher fiscal risk. The adjustment now centers on how far Brazilian markets have to move to reflect rising public spending and faster growth in public debt.
Leonel Mattos, Senior Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil, brings a background in teaching economics to his frequent reports on the Brazilian real against the U.S. dollar. He tracks the economic, financial, and political factors that move the Brazilian real, and his analysis feeds StoneX coverage of South American commodity markets for commercial clients managing currency and price risk.

Brazilian Real Positioning for Bolsonaro Turned Lula's Win Into a Rout
The Brazilian real depreciated sharply after the second round of Brazil's presidential election because the market was crowded on one side of the result. According to Mattos, Lula da Silva's victory "surprised investors who were heavily positioned for the victory of the main opposition candidate". Positioning that one-sided leaves little room for a different outcome, so the Brazilian real had to reprice quickly once the result was known. Notably, the selloff spread beyond the currency, with the Brazilian stock exchange also falling sharply on the Monday after the vote.
Brazil's Fiscal Outlook Shift Resets Pricing for Brazilian Assets
Brazil's fiscal outlook shifted away from a strong adjustment toward continued spending growth with Lula da Silva's reelection, resulting in a higher risk premium on Brazilian assets. Under Bolsonaro, investors had expected lower public expenses in Brazil and a stabilizing public debt path. In contrast, Lula's victory points to a scenario where "public expenses will continue to rise over the next four years, and therefore will help accelerate the public debt" [00:40], Mattos says. For commercial participants with Brazilian real exposure, the fiscal path, not the election result alone, now sets the tone for currency pricing. In his words, "this higher perception of fiscal risk for Brazilian assets after Lula's victory led to this market rout and a sharp devaluation of the Brazilian real".
