Colombia’s Rainfall In January Set To Decrease Up to 60%, El Niño Consolidates As Strong
Bogota (Coffee Network ) – Colombia’s coffee plantations soaked sun in December linked to a strong El Niño, while rainfall will decrease between 20%-60% in January below the 1991-2020 reference climatology in much of the coffee-growing region, the coffee research institute Cenicafe said.
The average air temperature will increase between 0.5°C and 2.5°C in January. The oceanic and atmospheric variables are consistent with a strong El Niño event, increasing radiation in much of the coffee region. Cenicafe recommends coffee growers to use sunscreen and clothing that covers most of the skin, Cenicafe added.
January is characterized by being one of the months corresponding to the first “dry” period or the lowest rainfall of the year, particularly in a large part of the North, East and North Central regions of the coffee region. On the contrary, during this month, the season of greatest rainfall occurs towards the south of the coffee region of Colombia.
At the Pueblo Bello (Cesar) station, precipitation was within the historical range. The number of days with rain greater than and equal to 0.1 mm was 5 days for the Pueblo Bello station and 8 days for San Antonio in Santander. The humidity index derived from the water balance for the Pueblo Bello station showed conditions of water deficit in the first half of the month, while at the San Antonio station there was a water deficit in the first and third weeks of the month.
In the coffee-producing regions of Tolima, Colombia’s largest third largest producing department rainfall was also below average in December. The volume of rain in December 2023 at the Bertha (Boyacá), La Trinidad (Tolima), Manuel Mallarino (Valle del Cauca) and Misiones (Cundinamarca) stations was below the historical range. At the Naranjal (Caldas), La Catalina (Risaralda) and Paraguaicito (Quindío) stations, rainfall was within the historical range, while at the El Rosario (Antioquia) and Jorge Villamil (Huila) stations it was above the historical range. The number of days with rain greater than and equal to 0.1 mm was 16 days for the El Rosario, La Trinidad and Misiones stations, 14 days for Manuel Mallarino, 13 days for Jorge Villamil and Paraguaicito, 12 days for Naranjal, 11 days for Bertha and 9 days for La Catalina. The result of the water balance at the El Rosario, Naranjal, and La Catalina stations showed normal conditions throughout the month. At the La Trinidad, Paraguaicito and Jorge Villamil stations, water deficit occurred in the week decade of the month.
