Coffee Closes Higher
Arabica futures ended higher on Friday as speculative buying and short covering continued to support the action. The most active contract for March delivery settled 515 points or 2.8% higher at 185.15 cents a pound. Since the opening, prices were firm as good buying followed yesterday's rebound. A strong support at the 175-level tested yesterday triggered the initial short covering that was followed up in today’s session attracting fresh buying. The open interest declined 2,782 lots evidencing the short covering. The nearby March/May premium rose to 3.50 cents a pound, a backwardation structure that indicates a perception of tighter supplies for prompt delivery. The market shifted to backwardation for the second position May / July as well, an early indication the tightness could persist. The soft complex was firm, with Cocoa settling 3.2 % higher at $4,583 ton, a 47-year high, and sugar 2,26 % higher at 23.57 cents a pound.
Certified stocks decreased 10,702 bags to 253,108 total bags. Pending grading decreased 5,989 bags to 39,062. Graded today a total of 9,920: 5,440 bags passed and 4,480 bags failed.
Robusta Mar24 contract settled at $3128 +65 or 2.12% higher with a 3067/3106 range. A volatile inside day with very low volumes, once spreads are stripped out less than 5k lots traded on the most active Mar24 contract. Seemed like a majority of the activity stemmed from near term shorts that went in yesterday covering in the face of no follow through. Structure weakened a touch with Mar/may seeing a 176/153 range on 2.4k lots settling $3 weaker at 161. Commercials seemed very much on the side lines with sporadic roaster buying noted in light volumes. Robusta CSO Mar24/May 120 put traded 1000x @ 13.
