CoffeeNetwork (New York) - Brazilians consumed a record volume of 1.05 million 60 kg bags of soluble coffee last year, which represented an increase of 5.2% compared to 2022 and represented the eighth consecutive annual increase in the historical series. The data is part of the annual report released by the Brazilian Association of the Soluble Coffee Industry (Abics).
Imports of soluble coffee of all types, 100% carried out by companies affiliated to the entity, had a significant drop of 32.7% compared to 2022, falling to 423.4 tons, or 18,345 bags. “It is a small volume, but it helps to offer more options to Brazilian consumers”, comments the director of Institutional Relations at Abics, Aguinaldo Lima.
According to him, the continuous growth in the consumption of soluble coffee in Brazil reflects the investments made by the sector's industries, which expand their product portfolio, and the promotion and training actions carried out by the segment, such as the “Cria e Curta” sectoral project, developed with the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil); the implementation of the sensory analysis protocol, in conjunction with the Institute of Food Technology (ITAL); training courses for specialists in the application of this methodology, called “IC Grader” ( Instant Coffee Grader ); and the social media campaign “Discover Solúvel Coffee”, which provides greater awareness of the qualities and versatility of the product by Brazilian consumers.
“With these actions, soluble coffee becomes better known to the population of Brazil and, as it becomes popular, whether in the form of a drink or in the preparation of various gastronomic dishes, it has registered consecutive increases in consumption”, he explains.
Lima adds that, as many of these actions are also focused abroad, such as the project with ApexBrasil – Explore & Enjoy, in its international version – and the sensory evaluation protocol, this imposes greater protagonism and increases visibility in the global market.
“Combined with the capacity of our industries to provide products with added value in technologies, quality, volume and competitiveness, such initiatives consolidate Brazil's position as a world leader in production and exports”, he notes.
Shipments of soluble coffee from Brazil totaled 3.7 million bags in 2023, registering a slight increase of 0.4% compared to the volume sent abroad from January to December 2022. The foreign exchange revenue obtained with product shipments abroad totaled US$ 701.3 million, showing a decline of 1.1% in the same period.
The main destination for Brazilian soluble coffee last year was the United States, which purchased 16,205 thousand tons, or 9.2% less than a year before. Next comes Argentina, with imports of 8,273 thousand tons (+18.6%); Japan, with 5,350 thousand tons (+23.4%); Indonesia, with thousand 5,219 tons (-15.7%); and Finland, with 5,034 thousand tons (+38.8%).
Russia, a major client of Brazil for decades, always occupying the top positions in the ranking of main destinations, fell to 19th place in 2023, with its performance being impacted by the continuation of the war against Ukraine. Last year, the Russians imported 1,310 tons, representing a drop of 58% compared to the 3,117 thousand tons registered in 2022.
“However, despite international restrictions, it is possible that its supply with soluble coffee will be complemented by some neighboring countries, such as Finland, which, as a residual buyer of the Brazilian product, came to be in sixth place, in 2022, and in fifth position in 2023”, said the director of Abics.
