StoneX experts explain how elevated diesel and natural gas prices are flowing through grain and dairy markets, and what it could mean heading into 2027.

October 29 – The Fed held steady as expected yesterday, though it’s worth noting that this was not a unanimous vote, with two dissenters in favor of a hike due to stubborn above-target inflation. Given the widespread expectations that rates would be held steady, the more notable takeaways came from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s subsequent press conference; while he has been very explicit in his preference for providing less forward guidance, the market will always parse through these comments with a fine-tooth comb in an attempt to glean insight into what lies ahead. Overall, Warsh delivered a modestly hawkish message after leaving rates unchanged, describing economic growth as strong, labor markets as healthy, and inflation as still unacceptably high. While acknowledging that financial conditions have tightened since September, Warsh said he was “unwilling and unable to call them tight,” reinforcing the view that the Fed has more work to do ahead. The press conference kept the door open to another rate hike should incoming data remain firm, with the policy statement noting: “the accumulation of more information will help the Committee determine the policy stance appropriate to ensure a timely return of inflation to the Committee's 2% goal.” CME’s FedWatch continues to point to overwhelming expectations (~83%) of a 25-basis point hike coming at the Fed’s December meeting but clearly will remain data dependent with much intrigue over these next six weeks.

Sterling has slipped for four straight sessions after failing at long-term resistance, and the British pound's weekly, daily and four-hour charts each frame that pullback differently. Together they show where the uptrend holds and what it would take to break the year-long range.

October 28 – Stock futures are pointing to a mostly higher open, led by the tech heavy Nasdaq as it attempts to add to impressive early week gains, with big earnings reports on deck after today’s close from both Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet, followed by Amazon tomorrow, and Apple next Monday (11/2). The VIX is starting the day slightly below yesterday’s close, hovering near 17.4 at the time of writing. The dollar is losing some steam after back-to-back days of sharp gains to start the week, trading just below the 102.34 mark after touching a fresh two-week high near 102.5 overnight. Treasury yields are off to a quietly mixed start, with 2-year yields up slightly to 4.743%, 10-year yields unchanged at 4.993%, and 30-year yields slightly lower to sit at 5.30%. The ags are mostly looking at a quietly higher open, looking to find their footing after an ugly selloff to start the week.

U.S. 10-year Treasury yields are steering the U.S. Dollar Index as Middle East risk, elevated oil prices, and rate hike bets shape the path for both markets. Escalation keeps yields and the dollar firm, while de-escalation and overbought momentum point to the risk of a reversal.
