Canadian Dollar Technical Outlook: USD/CAD Short-term Trade Levels

  • USD/CAD has rebounded nearly 1.2% from last week's low after stalling just ahead of the yearly open.
  • The recovery has reclaimed the 200-day moving average as daily momentum turns sharply higher.
  • Price is testing the upper boundary of the multi-week decline, leaving the near-term recovery vulnerable while below trend resistance.
  • A confirmed breach higher would strengthen the case that a more significant low is in place and shift the focus toward a larger reversal.
  • Canadian GDP and Fed Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole address highlight near-term event risk, with the BoC decision and employment data on deck next week.
  • Resistance 1.3908, 1.3942/55 (key), 1.3990- Support ~1.3845, 1.3767/74 (key), 1.3722/26

The Canadian dollar has come under renewed pressure this week as the breakdown in U.S.-Canada trade negotiations added another layer of uncertainty to the domestic growth outlook. The subsequent escalation in tariffs has helped fuel the USD/CAD advance, with markets now assessing the potential economic fallout from a prolonged trade dispute. The rebound has now carried price into the upper boundary of the multi-week decline, where buyers will need to prove the move has enough conviction to develop into something more significant. With Canadian growth data and Fed Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole address on tap, the next reaction could provide important guidance on whether a durable low is forming, or the broader downtrend is preparing to reassert itself. Battle lines drawn on the USD/CAD short-term technical charts.

Technical Outlook: In last month’s Canadian Dollar Short-term Outlook, we noted that USD/CAD was technical resistance near 1.4109, “and the focus is on possible inflection off this zone with the near-term long-bias vulnerable while below… Losses below 1.3978 would suggest a more significant correction is underway.” Price registered an intraday high at 1.4129 two-days later before reversing sharply lower with USD/CAD plunging more than 2.8% of those highs. The decline halted just pips ahead of the yearly open with price rebounding nearly 1.2% off Friday’s low.

The recovery has carried the pair back above the 200-day moving average today with a sharp rebound from overbought territory in daily RSI marking a trigger break in momentum. Is a more significant low in place? The first real test lies just higher with the July downtrend still intact. . . for now.

Notes: A closer look at Canadian Dollar price action shows USD/CAD trading within the confines of a descending pitchfork extending off the late-July high with price testing the upper parallel today- looking for a reaction off this slope into the close of the week. A topside breach exposes the 1.3908 pivot zone backed by key resistance at 1.3942/55- a region defined by the September high-day close (HDC), the October low-day close (LDC), and the 38.2% retracement of the yearly range. A daily close above this level is needed to suggest a more significant low is in place, and a larger trend reversal is underway. Subsequent resistance objectives eyed at the July low at 1.3990, the August open at 1.4021, and the 61.8% retracement of the June decline at 1.4051.

Initial support rests with the 200-day moving average, currently near ~1.3845. A break below the embedded channel would threaten a retest of support at the August low-day close (LDC) and the 61.8% retracement of the yearly range at 1.3767/75. Note that this level converges on the median line into the close of the week and a break / daily close below this threshold would be needed to mark resumption of the downtrend. Subsequent support objectives rest with 2025 September / August lows and the yearly open at 1.3722/26.

Bottom line: USD/CAD is testing multi-week downtrend resistance today and the focus is on possible inflection off this zone with the near-term recovery vulnerable while below this slope. From a trading standpoint, losses should be limited to 1.3767 IF a low is indeed in place with a daily close above 1.3955 needed to validate a larger reversal in trend.

Event risk picks up into the close of the week, with Canada’s annualized Q2 GDP report and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s highly anticipated Jackson Hole address tomorrow. Both events could influence the relative policy outlook between the Bank of Canada and Federal Reserve, leaving USD/CAD vulnerable to increased volatility. Attention then shifts to next Wednesday’s BoC rate decision, where policymakers are widely expected to remain on hold but guidance on inflation, growth, and the policy outlook will be closely scrutinized. Key U.S. and Canadian employment reports follow later in the week, providing another important read on economic conditions on both sides of the border. Stay nimble into the event risk and watch the weekly close for guidance.
