Opening an Account
MT4 is one of the world’s most popular FX trading platforms. StoneX Trading provides access to MT4 through our MT4 trading account which enables you to trade FX with expert advisors, customisable leverage and some of the most competitive variable spreads in the market.
MT4 accounts are separate from standard StoneX Trading CFD and spread betting accounts.
Apply for an MT4 account now.
MT4 operates differently from other StoneX Trading platforms, so a separate account is required.
Open a StoneX Trading MT4 account here.
There is no minimum deposit requirement for bank transfers. If you choose to fund your account by card, the minimum deposit is £100 (or the equivalent in your account's base currency).
Once your account has been activated, download instructions are provided to access the platform.
You can also download the MT4 platform here.
If there are issues accessing the platform, support is available to assist.
Please note: For MT4 to work correctly it must be installed on a location to which you have admin rights (this would normally be the C: drive of your computer or laptop).
MT4 is available on desktop and mobile devices. Please see our MT4 page for more details.
MT4 requires a supported operating system. Updated systems are recommended for optimal performance.
Demo Accounts
Demo accounts are available with virtual funds and access to trading features. Features of a StoneX Trading MT4 demo account include:
- 12 weeks usage
- £10,000 virtual funds

Trading: Orders and Positions
When trading currency pairs, you are speculating on the relative value of one currency against another.
Profit and loss is calculated in the quote currency, which is the second currency in the pair.
Common order types include:
- Market orders (executed immediately)
- Pending orders (executed at a specified price level)
- Stop-loss and limit orders (used to manage risk and close positions)
Trade sizes are displayed in platform-specific units rather than standard spot FX sizing.
MT4 size | Spot FX Size | Price per point of movement |
|---|---|---|
10 | 1,000,000 | 100 |
1 | 100,000 | 10 |
0.10 | 10,000 | 1 |
0.01 | 1,000 | 0,10 |
Profit and loss is calculated based on the difference between opening and closing prices, multiplied by position size.
Partial closure of positions may not be supported on all MT4 configurations.
Trades are generally executed through the trading platform. Support may assist in certain circumstances.
Trades may be rejected due to price movement, insufficient funds, or execution conditions.
'Back to base' or 'convert back to base' (CB2B) refers to the automated process of converting any realised trading profit or loss (including any charges or fees) across to the account base currency. The conversion takes place at the instant any unrealised P&L becomes realised, and will be based on our quoted rate +/- 0.50%.
Unrealised P/L in the account summary is calculated using our current bid/offer quote. It's calculated back to your base currency, using the CB2B rate.
Trading: Margin & Leverage
Leverage allows a position to be opened with a smaller initial amount relative to total market exposure.
Trading Leverage | Equivalent Margin Required |
|---|---|
20:1 | 5% |
25:1 | 4% |
30:1 | 3.33% |
Higher leverage increases market exposure while reducing the margin required to open a position. Leverage can amplify both profits and losses.
Margin is calculated based on position size, price and the applicable leverage for the instrument.
Leverage may vary by market and instrument, and may be lower for certain products.
To request a leverage change, please contact our client management team.
Please note that leverage is applied on an account level, and will apply to all valid instruments.
Risk may be managed by adjusting position size, using lower leverage and applying risk management tools such as stop-loss orders.
Trading: Costs
Trading may not involve commission, but positions are subject to overnight financing charges.
Financing is calculated based on position size, direction, and market conditions, and applied to positions held overnight.
Financing is applied to positions held beyond the daily cutoff time.
Charges may be adjusted to account for weekends or non-trading days.
Financing is applied separately and can be viewed in account history.
Spreads and market specifications are available within the platform.
A dividend adjustment reflects payments made by the underlying market and is applied to positions accordingly.
Adjustments are credited to long positions and debited from short positions.
Accounts with no activity for a defined period may be classified as inactive and subject to an inactivity fee.
Inactive accounts may also require reactivation before trading can resume.
