Canadian Dollar Technical Outlook: USD/CAD Short-term Trade Levels

  • USD/CAD has broken above a major pivot zone after rebounding sharply off the monthly low.
  • The weekly opening range is taking shape just above former resistance turned support- breakout to drive.
  • A sustained hold above the breakout zone would support continuation of the recovery while failure would threaten a false-break scenario and renewed downside pressure.
  • Resistance 1.3808/13 (key), 1.3878, 1.3916/42- Support 1.3725/33, 1.3692 (key), 1.3638

USD/CAD is attempting to stabilize above a major breakout zone after pushing through key resistance late last week. The move marks an important shift in the near-term technical structure, with the weekly opening range now forming just above former resistance turned support. The focus in the sessions ahead will be on whether buyers can defend this pivot and sustain the breakout, or if the move begins to unravel into a false-break scenario. Battle lines drawn on the USD/CAD short-term technical charts.

Technical Outlook: In my last Canadian Dollar Short-term Outlook, we noted that the USD/CAD rebound was, “now approaching downtrend resistance- risk for inflection early in the month. From a trading standpoint, rallies would need to be limited to 1.3650 IF price is heading lower on this stretch…” USD/CAD broke higher two-days later with the rally extending more than 1.6% off the monthly May low. The advance broke through pivotal resistance last week at 1.3725/33- a region defined by the September & August lows, the objective yearly open, and the 38.2% retracement of the November decline. The weekly opening-range is now set just above this pivot zone, and the focus is on a breakout in the days ahead to fuel the next move in USD/CAD. We discussed this setup at length in this today’s episode of the Opening Bell.

Notes: A closer look at Canadian Dollar price action shows USD/CAD trading within the confines of an ascending pitchfork extending off the monthly low with the median line offering resistance this week. Key resistance is eyed at the 61.8% retracement of the March decline and the 200-day moving average at 1.3808/13. Note that the median line converges on this threshold into the close of the week and a breach / close above this zone is needed to fuel the next major leg of the advance. Subsequent resistance is eyed at the 78.6% retracement at 1.3878 and the 1.3916/42- a region define by yearly high-day close (HDC), the September HDC, and the October low-day close (LDC). Look for a large reaction there IF reached.

A break below this key pivot zone exposes near-term bullish invalidation at the 38.2% retracement of the monthly advance at 1.3692. Note that the lower parallel converged on this level today a break / daily close below this slope would be needed to suggest a more significant high is in place and a larger trend reversal is underway. Subsequent support rests at the 61.8% retracement at 1.3638 and the objective monthly open at 1.3582.

Bottom line: USD/CAD has set the weekly opening range just above pivotal support- look for the breakout to offer guidance here. From a trading standpoint, losses would need to be limited to 1.3692 IF price is heading higher on this stretch with a close above 1.3813 needed to fuel the next major leg of the advance . Stay nimble here and watch the weekly close for guidance. Review my latest Canadian Dollar Weekly Forecast for a closer look at the longer-term USD/CAD technical trade levels.

Gold and S&P 500 analysis: What now after Warsh’s hawkish speech?

The dollar surged across the board after the Fed Chair Kevin Warsh surprised with a hawkish-leaning speech at the Jackson Hole summit. All the bearish dollar bets that had been accumulated since last Friday on the back of data weakness and bond market troubles had to be squared and that triggered a short squeeze rally for the dollar. Gold and silver dropped, as a result, as too did bitcoin, while US indices were giving back earlier gains.
