Crypto Outlook: Caution Persists Despite Weak NFP Data

The beginning of October has been marked by a persistent lack of direction across the cryptocurrency market. This dynamic has remained in place even after the release of U.S. employment data, which so far has not been enough to reduce the appeal of alternative markets competing with cryptocurrencies for investor attention in the short term.

The beginning of October has been marked by a persistent lack of direction across the cryptocurrency market. This dynamic has remained in place even after the release of U.S. employment data, which so far has not been enough to reduce the appeal of alternative markets competing with cryptocurrencies for investor attention in the short term.

Although expectations no longer point toward a particularly aggressive Federal Reserve in the near term, confidence has also failed to recover in a meaningful way. Part of this situation stems from the fact that more stable markets, particularly the bond market, continue to offer attractive opportunities and may be limiting demand for risk assets such as Bitcoin. As long as this backdrop remains in place, the indecisive environment seen during recent sessions could continue to play an important role across the cryptocurrency market.

What Happened with the NFP Report?

At the end of the week, the United States released its latest Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, which measures changes in nonfarm employment during September. In this case, the report showed the creation of 29,000 jobs, well below the market expectation of 89,000.

The result highlighted a significant slowdown in labor market growth compared with August, when approximately 133,000 jobs were created. This is important because weaker employment growth may reduce the room available for the Federal Reserve to adopt a more aggressive policy stance over the coming months.

Current market expectations are already beginning to reflect this shift. Investors now assign roughly a 76% probability that the Fed will keep interest rates unchanged at the October 28 meeting, largely because a softer labor market reduces the need for further monetary tightening.

In theory, this backdrop should be favorable for risk assets such as cryptocurrencies because it lowers the probability of a higher-rate environment, which typically reduces the liquidity available for speculative investments. However, the employment data has not been sufficient to trigger a meaningful recovery in market confidence.

The main reason appears to be the continued strength of alternative markets. In particular, the U.S. bond market remains highly attractive even after the NFP release. 10-year Treasury yields continue to trade above the 5.2% level, remaining near highs not seen in decades and preserving the relative appeal of fixed-income investments compared with higher-risk assets.

This situation can also be observed in recent Bitcoin activity. Despite the NFP release, Open Interest, which measures the total value of open positions across the market, continues to develop around the $26 billion area without meaningful changes.

This suggests that there has been neither a significant reduction in positions nor a meaningful influx of new capital capable of supporting a stronger recovery in demand. In other words, market participants appear to be adopting a wait-and-see approach. This cautious behavior may be linked to the continued attractiveness of alternative markets such as U.S. Treasuries.

Taking all this into account, the cryptocurrency market's ability to regain momentum continues to be constrained by the strength of competing markets. Although the employment data reduced the likelihood of a more aggressive Federal Reserve, the appeal of the bond market remains elevated and could continue limiting a stronger recovery in cryptocurrency demand over the short term.

Bitcoin Versus Other Markets

It is also important to monitor how Bitcoin's relationship with traditional risk assets continues to evolve, particularly with the S&P 500 (SPX), one of the most important equity benchmarks in the United States. The 25-session correlation coefficient between BTC and the index remains close to 1, highlighting a very strong positive relationship between both markets. Correlation coefficients can change over time.

This relationship has become particularly important because U.S. equity markets have also struggled to regain momentum and push consistently beyond their record-high territory. Part of this caution appears to be linked to the increasing attractiveness of more stable markets, especially the bond market.

What stands out is that Bitcoin seems to be reacting in a very similar manner. This suggests that the leading cryptocurrency continues to behave more like a traditional risk asset and may remain exposed to the same factors currently limiting equity market performance.

As long as the correlation between Bitcoin and major stock indices remains elevated, the caution visible in markets such as the SPX could continue spilling over into cryptocurrencies and contribute to a broader phase of indecision in the sessions ahead.

Confidence Continues to Show Signs of Caution

Recent movements in the Crypto Fear & Greed Index also continue to point toward a more cautious market environment. The indicator is currently trading around 69 points, remaining within "Greed" territory but still unable to move into the "Extreme Greed" zone.

This remains important because it suggests that confidence is still positive, although the pace of improvement that characterized previous weeks has begun to fade. In addition, the indicator is gradually moving closer to neutral territory, indicating that enthusiasm across the market has moderated during recent sessions.

The evolution of this indicator remains important because it serves as a measure of risk appetite across the cryptocurrency market. If sentiment continues to lose momentum, it could begin to limit the market's ability to sustain consistent demand in the short term and suggest that some investor interest is shifting toward alternative opportunities.

Under this scenario, the recent slowdown in sentiment could become another indication that a broader phase of indecision continues to gain relevance across the cryptocurrency market.
